Harvest Season at Gordz Hot Sauce
Pepper Harvest in Canada at Gordz Hot Sauce farm was very different this year! In past years, we generally held a 'harvest day' on Thanksgiving, as the True North is not usually very plant friendly after this time. Friends would gather for a picking party! It was generally a 1 day affair. This year, well, this year was interesting to say the least. We had a late planting by at least a month or more, due to weather. After flooding rains, making tilling and planting difficult, our weather immediately turned to extreme heat The first sprout of pepper blossoms basically fell off the plant in the heat; thereby, not producing any fruit. The next crop of pepper flowers produced fruit, which was late for growing season. Nevertheless, the hot pepper plants grew big and proud. They bore an incredible amount of fruit to be harvested this year. Thankfully, the weather stayed amenable for at least a month longer than usual. That helped us so much! We did not have to recreate our giant greenhouse tenting effect for the fields this year. That saved us so much work.
So, how did we handle it harvesting the crop this year you ask? We took it in stride. We started in August with picking the ripe ones and continued this pattern about every 3 days until October. With fingers crossed for the weather to hold, there were no frost warnings until very late in October, which helped a great deal! Once the risk of frost became imminent, we picked the ripe peppers and then cut the plants whole and put them in the greenhouse where they survived very well off the plant itself. The peppers continued to ripen beautifully in the safety of the greenhouse, where we then picked them under the cover of the greenhouse, making it an altogether pleasant experience. Day after day, we picked ripe peppers from the plants until the threat of fruit freezing became real. Then we just harvested them all! Season over.
The bounty of colourful peppers this harvest was nothing short of Amazing!
I do believe we hit a record with picking hot peppers on Halloween in Canada ending the 2019 growing season.

Chocolate 7 pot Douglah
The 7 Pot Douglah, also known as the 7 Pod Douglah or Chocolate 7 Pod, is one of the rarest and hottest of the 7 pod strains. Currently the 3rd hottest pepper in the world behind the Carolina Reaper and the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion. The 7 pot Douglah is characterized by a dark brown/deep purple skin. The pepper starts out green and matures to the dark color unique to the Douglah. Yes, Gordz grows them too.
Yellow 7 Pot Barrackpore
The 7 pot Barrackpore sits prevalently among THE hottest peppers of the world. Though, in terms of flavor, the Barrackpore variety tends towards a little more bitterness and slightly less sweetness than other 7 pot peppers (and other superhots as well). Discovered in Barrackpore, India; these atomic peppers range from 1,000,000 – 1,350,000 on the Scoville scale (SHU). Definitely not for the timid hot pepper lover.
Carolina Reaper – THE HOTTEST PEPPER IN THE WORLD (currently) Exceptionally Hot!
The Carolina Reaper was specifically bred for heat. The Reaper, a hybrid created by Ed Currie of South Carolina. This pepper does not have the best flavor of the bunch, but boy oh boy are they HOT. In 2013, Guinness dubbed it the hottest pepper in the world, surpassing the previous record holder, the Trinidad Scorpion. A man was hospitalized with 'thunderclap headaches' after eating a Carolina Reaper, which caused the blood vessels in his brain to narrow. It does measure over 2 Million Scoville Heat Units! BEWARE
Chocolate Bhut Jolokia
The chocolate (brown) ghost pepper is another organic offspring of the red bhut jolokia. Also known as one of the hottest peppers on earth, this pepper packs a punch topping the Scoville scale at over 1,000,000 SHU!
This variety of ghost pepper has a notoriously long germination time, but it's worth it. This variety of bhut jolokia offers a delicious, smoky flavor. They are also very aromatic!
You will find the chocolate has the same heat as red, but it has a distinctively sweet aftertaste.
